- Plato

What is Integrative Medicine? Andrew Weil, M.D., is the world's leading proponent of alternative medicine, right?Wrong.Although this is how the popular media often portrays him, Dr. Weil is actually the world's leading proponent of integrative medicine, a philosophy that is considerably different from a blanket endorsement of alternative medicine. To fully understand Dr. Weil's advice - presented in his Web sites, bestselling books and lectures worldwide - it's important to grasp what integrative medicine is, and is not.The first step is mastering some basic terms.Using synthetic drugs and surgery to treat health conditions was known just a few decades ago as, simply, "medicine." Today, this system is increasingly being termed "conventional medicine." This is the kind of medicine most Americans still encounter in hospitals and clinics. Often both expensive and invasive, it is also very good at some things; for example, handling emergency c…

Systemic aspects of psoriasis An integrative model based on intestinal etiology David L. Mcmillin MA, , Douglas G. Richards PD, Eric A. Mein MD and Carl D. Nelson DC
Meridian Institute, Virginia Beach, VA, USA.

Available online 14 September 2000.

AbstractPsoriasis can best be understood from a multifactorial approach that recognizes the systemic aspects of the disorder. Among the various factors thought to be involved in the etiology and pathogenesis of psoriasis, bowel pathology has assumed a noteworthy position in the literature. This article reviews the psoriasis/bowel connection with regard to abnormal bowel structure and physiology in psoriasis patients. Clinical implications of bowel involvement in psoriasis are discussed within the framework of an integrative medicine model that emphasizes natural therapeutics for addressing the systemic aspects of the illness.

AbstractBackground: Nutritional research has focused on the effects of specific nutrients' ability to cause or prevent cancer. While β-carotene and selenium (both important for antioxidant systems) have cancer prevention capabilities, their antineoplastic mechanism(s) remains to be elucidated. Methods: In a prospective, randomized study design we evaluated immunological changes in free-living, healthy aged humans (57–84 years of age) given a placebo, β-carotene (45 mg/day), and/or selenium (400 μg/day) supplement for 6 months and after 2 months of discontinuation. Peripheral blood lym…

AbstractThe effects of long-term consumption of the bioflavonoid mixture, French maritime pine bark extract (Pycnogenol®), were assessed on aggregation of platelets from cigarette smokers and nonsmokers. Previously we showed that a single dose of Pycnogenol® reduced platelet aggregation in cigarette smokers in a dose–response fashion. Cigarette smoking increased platelet reactivity aggregation when measured 2 h after smoking the first cigarette of the day. Blood was collected immediately before and 5 min after smoking three cigarettes each. Smoking increased p…

What Is the Difference between Integrative, Complementary, and Alternative Medicine? The terms complementary medicine and alternative medicine are often used synonymously but in fact there are very important distinctions between the two. Alternative therapies typically are promoted as viable treatment options, alternatives to mainstream therapy such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Alternative regimens are unproved, expensive, and potentially harmful. The Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering provides complementary therapies, but no alternative therapies.

Rockefeller Chair in Integrative Medicine As a researcher, educator, and planner, I have worked in alternative and complementary (integrative) medicine and psychosocial aspects of cancer care for over 25 years. I came to Memorial Sloan Kettering in 1999 to create the Integrative Medicine Service, a multifaceted program that offers inpatient therapies at Memorial Hospital and outpatient services at the Bendheim Integrative Medicine Center. The Service's two-pronged research effort includes studies to evaluate the ability of specific complementary therapies to reduce important symptoms associated with cancer and cancer treatments, and the investigation of botanicals for potential anti-tumor effects. The Integrative Medicine Web site, www.mskcc.org/AboutHerbs, offers evidence-based information on herbs, vitamins, and unproved cancer treatments at no charge to professionals and the publi…
